Lake Como Holiday Packages
When you hear the word "Italy," do lush vineyards, historical ruins, warm waterways and fresh pasta spring to mind? While those things are characteristics of this boot-shaped country, a holiday in Como will show you a different side to Italy. North of Milan and near the Swiss border, Lake Como combines views of towering mountains and quaint villages alongside a body of water that's considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. It's a holiday destination for all kinds of travellers, including families, busy professionals and couples.
Things to Do in Lake Como
Once you’ve disembarked at nearby Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP), your Lake Como holiday begins! Take a taxi or train into town, or consider Lake Como car hire options from Wotif. The small settlements all around the Y-shaped lake are ideal for laid-back walking tours. Architecture buffs may want to check out the clover-shaped Basilica di San Fedele, which has parts dating back to the sixth century, and the relatively new La Cattedrale sul Lago, where construction began in 1396. A visit to the Museo Didattico della Seta di Como is sure to be “smooth”—the museum explains the history of Como's silk trade.
Looking for something a little more adventurous? Take a funicular (read: tram) ride up 750 metres to the town of Brunate and scale the Faro Voltiano, hike the greenway on Como's west side or charter a seaplane over the lake. Children will enjoy the “trenino” (small train) that ferries passengers on a 20-minute journey to nearby San Giovanni, as well as the playground and merry-go-round near the lakeside path to Villa Olma.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
In the mood for some silk ties and scarves? On holidays to Lake Como, you can buy all sorts of silk items on the cheap. During the 12th century, the Milanese burned almost every building in Como, and when the area rebuilt, it started specialising in the silk trade, a legacy that continues to this day. The town also contains a number of small boutiques that offer men and women's fashions, homewares and leather goods.
Lake Como is no exception to the rule of great Italian food. You'll find fresh local fish, classic wines, risotto, ravioli, crostini…you get the idea. Feel free to scream for ice cream (well, not literally) in any of the hamlets around the lake, which each offers its own take on gelato.
When it comes to nightlife, Lake Como is relatively sleepy, so while you can’t expect to stumble upon a dancefloor or raucous party, you will find a good concentration and variety of bars in the town of Bellagio. If you prefer to float with your beverages, you'll find a cocktail boat in Como, with most of the touring vessels offering wine and beer.
